Permanent Residency

Permanent Residency (Residencia Permanente) is the highest resident status in Mexico without citizenship. It has no expiration date, grants the right to work without additional permits, access to social programs, and a simplified path to naturalization. ARGA Mexico supports obtaining permanent residency on all available grounds.

Grounds for obtaining permanent residency

Permanent residency can be obtained: after 4 years of continuous temporary residency; through investment (real estate purchase from USD 200,000 or investment in a Mexican business); through marriage to a Mexican citizen; for retirees with passive income from ~USD 2,000 per month; and directly for those with Mexican children or parents. ARGA selects the fastest and most reliable basis.

Procedure and documents

The application is filed with INM. The document package includes proof of the basis (bank statements, marriage/birth certificates, property ownership documents), an apostilled criminal record certificate, a medical certificate, and photographs. ARGA prepares and translates all documents and accompanies you to the INM appointment.

Review timeline

INM reviews permanent residency applications within 1 to 3 months after accepting the full package. The overall timeline, including document preparation, is 3–6 months. ARGA monitors the process and responds promptly to inspector requests.

Life with permanent residency

With permanent residency, you can stay in Mexico indefinitely, work for any employer, start a business, and use the IMSS public healthcare system. Being absent from the country for more than 6 continuous months can be grounds for status cancellation — ARGA advises on the rules for maintaining permanent residency.

Frequently asked questions

Is permanent residency lost if I leave Mexico?

Permanent residency can be canceled after an absence of more than 6 continuous months. Short trips do not affect the status. ARGA advises on the rules and helps arrange a permit for extended absence if needed.

Can I get permanent residency directly, skipping temporary residency?

Yes, on several grounds: through investment, marriage to a citizen, having Mexican children/parents, or for retirees with sufficient income.

How much does permanent residency through real estate investment cost?

The government threshold is real estate valued at least ~USD 200,000 (40,000 minimum wages). ARGA will advise on current amounts and help structure the deal correctly for INM confirmation.
