Mexican Citizenship
Mexican citizenship provides access to a passport with visa-free entry to 160+ countries, including all of Latin America and the Schengen Area. Mexico allows dual citizenship, so naturalization does not require giving up your previous passport. ARGA Mexico supports the naturalization process through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE).
Naturalization requirements
Standard path: 5 years of continuous legal residence in Mexico. Accelerated path — 2 years for those married to a Mexican citizen or with Mexican children, as well as for natives of Latin American countries and the Iberian Peninsula. For those with refugee status, 4 years is sufficient. Knowledge of the Spanish language and Mexican history is required (a written SRE exam).
Naturalization procedure
The application is filed with SRE (Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores). Stages: gathering and notarizing documents; filing the application and passing the written test on Spanish and Mexican history; an interview with an SRE officer; receiving the naturalization certificate; obtaining a Mexican passport. Timeline — 3–12 months depending on the SRE office.
Dual citizenship and legal consequences
Mexico allows multiple citizenships. After naturalization, you keep your previous passport (if your country of origin allows it). With a Mexican passport you get: visa-free entry to 160+ countries, the right to Mexican consular protection worldwide, and access to social programs and government positions.
Preparing for the SRE exam

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to renounce my Russian/Ukrainian citizenship?
No. Mexico allows dual citizenship. Mexico has no requirement to renounce your previous citizenship. It is important to check your country of origin's position.
Is the SRE exam difficult?
It's a basic-level test: Spanish at an A2–B1 level and general questions on Mexican history. ARGA helps you prepare — most clients pass on the first attempt.
Can I get citizenship through a child's birth in Mexico?
A child born in Mexico automatically receives Mexican citizenship (jus soli). Parents do not get an accelerated path through this, but having a citizen child simplifies obtaining residency and is taken into account during naturalization.
