Family Reunification and Family Residency

Mexican law provides a special legalization path for family members of residents and citizens. This is one of the most reliable and fastest routes. ARGA Mexico supports families at every stage — from the consular visa to the resident card at INM.

Who qualifies for family residency

Family reunification in Mexico is available to: spouses (formal marriage or officially registered partnership), minor children (under 18) and adult dependent children, as well as parents of a Mexican resident or citizen. Apostilled documents are required for filing: marriage, birth, and divorce certificates (if applicable).

Documents and translations

The document package for family residency includes: passports, apostilled marriage/birth certificates, proof of relationship (photos, correspondence, shared history), the sponsor's valid residency or citizenship, and the sponsor's financial documents. All foreign documents must be translated into Spanish by a certified translator. ARGA organizes the full cycle: notary, apostille, translation.

Complex cases

ARGA handles complex family situations: spouses of different nationalities, an unresolved previous marriage, non-standard family structures, cases where a family member has a criminal case or Red Notice in their country of origin. An individual legal strategy is developed for each case.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get family residency if the sponsor only has temporary residency?

Yes. Having valid temporary residency is enough to sponsor family members. The family residency term will be tied to the sponsor's residency term.

How long does family reunification take?

Including document preparation and INM review — 6 to 16 weeks. With a complete document package, the process can be sped up.

What if the documents were issued in a country where getting an apostille is difficult?

ARGA has experience with non-standard situations: replacing an apostille with consular legalization, recognizing foreign documents through Mexican notarial procedures. Each case is reviewed individually.
